Mongolia

Thought to be the last unspoiled wilderness in Asia, Mongolia is home to vast and dramatic landscapes, rare wildlife, and one of the last surviving nomadic cultures on earth. High desert and open spaces set the stage for unparalleled star gazing, horseback riding, fossil hunting and visits with nomad families.

Trace the steps of Genghis Khan as you roam expansive grasslands on takhi horseback, and ride camels through the vast Gobi Desert. For those with a cultural yearning, listen to Mongolian throat singers, sample local mare’s milk and head to Terelj National Park to visit the reindeer tribes. Test your skills at the traditional Mongolian sport of archery, watch a wrestling match in Ulaanbaatar, and end your days in traditional ger (yurt) camps.

Our Personal Picks

  • Fossil hunt in the Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs
  • The Naadam Festival
  • A visit to Karakorum
  • A raft trip down the Tuul River
  • A stay in Three Camel Lodge in the Gobi Desert

When to Travel

The travel season begins in mid-May, with Ger camps beginning to open their doors and the chilly weather beginning to warm.  June through September are the warmest months to visit, with August tending to be rainier, and July being the month to see the Naadam Festival.

Visa Information

Canadian citizens do not need a visa for entry into Mongolia for a stay of up to 30 days. US citizens do not need a visa if visiting for fewer than 90 days, but for stays for more than 30 days, you'll need to register with Mongolian Immigration within seven days of arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of arrival.
