Continue to Phnom Sampeau, a sacred mountain dotted with interesting pagodas and stupas. Overnight in Battambang (Breakfast) Day 4: Battambang to Siem Reap After breakfast, take a speedboat along the narrow Sangker River, offering some intimate glimpses of rural life in Battambang province. Pass close by the Prek Toal Biosphere where you may be lucky enough to see some rare large water birds. Emerge into the Tonle Sap Lake, which feels like a vast inland sea. Travel to the floating village of Chong Kneas where you will transfer to Siem Reap and check into your hotel. In the afternoon travel back in time to one of the earliest capitals in the Angkor area, Hariharilaya, now known as Roluos. See the brick temple of Lolei, Preah Ko, and Bakong. For those that are interested, a stop can be made at the small country town of Rulous for a look at the real Cambodia. Overnight in Siem Reap (Breakfast)
Note: During the dry season from February to August, the low water level of the Sangke River can make the boat ride to Siem Reap impossible. During this season, we will arrange an overland transfer from Battambang to Siem Reap.
Day 5: Siem Reap - Angkor Tours Rise early to view Ta Prohm in the dawn light. This temple has been abandoned to the elements and is known as the “jungle temple” for the tentacle-like roots slowly strangling the surviving stones. Continue to the giant pyramid of Takeo, one of the highest temples in the Angkor area. Visit the remains of an old Angkorian bridge which once spanned the Siem Reap river. There is an option to visit the smaller temples of Chau Sey Devada and Thommanon for avid temple enthusiasts. Visit the royal bathing pond of Sra Srang, once for the exclusive use of the king and his concubines. Walk to the first great Buddhist monastery in Cambodia, Banteay Kdei. Continue to the large stone temple of Eastern Mebon before returning to Siem Reap via the temple of Kravanh. Journey to the mountain temple of Phnom Bakheng to see the sunset over Angkor Wat. Overnight in Siem Reap (Breakfast) Day 6: Siem Reap - Angkor Tours This morning journey north to Kbal Spean, the original “River of a Thousand Lingas.” Head south to the petite pink temple of Banteay Srei. Later visit the 12th century temple of Banteay Samre. Finish with the sunset over the rice fields from the royal crematorium of Pre Rup, a classic view of the Cambodian countryside. Believed to be the world’s largest religious building, this temple is the perfect fusion of symbolism and symmetry and a source of pride and strength to all Khmers. Overnight in Siem Reap (Breakfast)
Day 8: Siem Reap - Tonle Sap and Angkor Thom Taking a break from the temples, travel out to the mighty Tonle Sap Lake to visit the floating village of Chong Kneas.
