Laos

Probably the best kept secret in Southeast Asia, Laos is the darling of many seasoned travelers. Lush green rice fields, remote highlands and gushing waterfalls pepper the remarkable landscape of a country that has managed to hold on to its laid back culture while rejuvenating nearly lost arts such as silk weaving.

Cycle the tranquil lanes and riverfront of enchanting Luang Prabang, an entire town registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cool yourself in the refreshing waters of mighty Kuang Si Waterfall, known as the “Niagra of the East.” Take a leisurely afternoon boat cruise to the enigmatic Pak Ou Caves, filled with hundreds of Buddha images from devoted pilgrims. Watch the saffron-robed monks collect alms from locals as they make their way through the streets at dawn. Get off the beaten path and discover the local Akha culture while trekking Luang Namtha. Mingle with locals at the bustling riverfront markets in the charming capital of Vientiane. Delve into Laos’s mysterious past and ponder why the immense granite containers are scattered across the hills at the Plain of Jars. Experience the life of an elephant mahout at the Elephant Park Project, a community based project dedicated to protecting these magnificent creatures. A country seemingly forgotten in time and full of cultural discovery and soft adventure opportunities, Laos has something for everyone.

Our Personal Picks

  • A traditional Baci ceremony in a local village
  • The Luangsay cruise down the Mekong
  • The 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don) in southern Laos
  • The Khmer style ruins at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Champasak
  • A kayak trip between the beautiful limestone karts of Nong Khiaw
  • A jungle walk to search for medicinal plants with the villagers at the Kamu Eco-lodge
  • A visit to an impoverished village to donate children’s books and supplies

When to Travel

Sapa Guide

The cool winter from November to February is a favorite time for visits due to lower temperatures and less rainfall, but river cruising and waterfalls are more spectacular from June to October.

Visas
US and Canadian citizens need a visa to enter Laos. Most travelers find visa on arrival to be the most convenient option. Visas are available on arrival at the Luang Prabang and Vientiane airports, and all other entry points except Nam Heuang Bridge and Veun Kham. The fee is $50 for US citizens and $57 for Canadian citizens, and you need two recent passport photos. It is also possible to arrange a visa through Lao Embassies overseas. If you prefer to use a visa service to handle your visa applications, we recommend CIBT Global Visa and Passport Professionals.
