Huay Xai - Luang Namtha - Muang La - Nong Khiaw - Luang Prabang

Whether you are looking for an off the beaten path trekking experience or simply want to extend your trip from northern Thailand, the Northern Laos Adventure tour offers tranquil scenery, untouched forests, and remote hill tribe villages. This tour starts in Huay Xai at the Thai border near Chiang Rai and cuts across northern Laos with some interesting treks and beautiful boat rides along the way before finishing in the old royal capital of Luang Prabang.

Itinerary



Day 1: Huay Xai to Luang Namtha

After crossing the Mekong River and going through border formalities, your guide will welcome you in Huay Xai. Visit Fort Carnot, a restored French Colonial Military Fort that offers great views over Huay Xai and the Mekong River. Then embark on a 5-hour drive to Luang Namtha. Along the way, you will visit hill tribe villages including Khmu and Lu minorities.  In the afternoon, stop by Kao Rao Cave with its impressive limestone formations. Arrive in Luang Namtha at mid afternoon where you have the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Luang Namtha.

Day 2: Luang Namtha 
              
After breakfast, climb up to Phoumpok Stupa to enjoy a great panoramic view of Luang Namtha. Then head into the jungle with your local guide will introduce you to local flora and fauna. For lunch you will have a wonderful Tai or Akha-style picnic in the jungle, cooked and prepared with bamboo pipes (a real treat!). After lunch, continue trekking until you reach Ban Nammutmai, a picturesque Akha village built on the hillside. Here you will learn more about this ethnic minority group, including a chance to hear  traditional folklore stories. After, travel to Ban Nam Jang Village, where they specialize in the making of jute paper. End with a visit to the Luang Namtha market, where you can stock up on fantastic souvenirs. Overnight in Luang Namtha. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 3: Luang Namtha to Muang La                 
This morning, continue your journey south for about 4 hours to Muang La. You will stop over at a local village of Namdeng Nua, and then for lunch break at Oudomxay.  After lunch, you have a chance to visit the intriguing Pra Xack Kham Temple with its sacred Buddha image. The 400-year-old legendary statue is said to have many supernatural powers, and is widely worshipped among the local Buddhists. Then arrive at Muang La by mid afternoon, famous for its natural hot springs. Here you can relax with a traditional massage, or enjoy the hot springs. Overnight in Muang La. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 4: Muang La
               
Depart in the morning by four wheel drive to Pak Khai, a pleasant short drive through magnificent views of the river Pak Nam, rice terraces and many small villages. Upon arrival, you begin a 5-hour trek on small green roads where some small rivers flow. There will be an opportunity to meet with local farmers working in rice fields and learn how they cultivate their lands, fish and hunt small game. Later, arrive at the villages of Ban Phavie, a beautiful village Khamu at the top of a hill. The trek resumes after lunch to reach fresh waterfalls. Return back to Muang La by late afternoon. (All meals)

Day 5: Muang La to Nong Khiaw
This morning, drive about 1.5 hours to the riverside town of Muang Khua and board our local private boat for a 5-hour cruise down the Nam Ou River to Nong Khiaw.  This particular stretch offers stunning scenery and remote villages, including Ban Sob Jaem a Khmu and Hmong village that can only be accessed by boat. You will reach Nong Khiaw by late afternoon. Upon checking into your hotel, you have the option of taking a short bicycle ride to the picturesque local limestone caves nearby. Bicycles will be available for hire at the hotel, and your guide will be happy to assist. Overnight in Nong Khiaw. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 6: Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang

This morning, cruise about 8 hours by private boat down the Nam Ou River, enjoying the lush green forests and landscape. Along the way, stop to visit a local village and the mysterious caves of Pak Ou, two caves set in a limestone cliff facing the Mekong River crammed with thousands Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes. You will have lunch by the river banks and there is an optional stop at an artisans village (Ban Xangkong) to see typical local handicrafts. Then continue your trip down the river to Luang Prabang and be transferred to your hotel by early evening. Overnight in Luang Prabang. (Breakfast, Lunch)

Day 7: Luang Prabang
Begin the day with a walking tour of this lovely city, taking in some of the beautiful temples on offer. These will include the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, whose dramatic sweeping roofs represent the classical Luang Prabang style, as well as Wat Mai and Wat Sene, the oldest temple in Luang Prabang. Also stop by the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Center to learn more about the different ethnic minorities who live in Laos. End the tour with a climb up the magical Mount Phousi, with its spectacular panoramic view of Luang Prabang and the mighty Mekong River. Overnight in Luang Prabang. (Breakfast)

Day 8: Luang Prabang
This morning, drive about 1.5 hours out of Luang Prabang, passing rural landscapes with rice terraces and pineapple fields. Visit Ban Longlao, a local H'mong village where the culture, customs and language are all different to mainstream Laos. Your 2.5-hour trek starts from this H'mong village through primary forest before reaching the spectacular Kuang Si Waterfall. Lunch can be taken at the falls with time for relaxation, swimming and the possibility to climb to the top of the waterfall. Afterwards you return to Luang Prabang in time to catch the sun setting over the Mekong. Overnight in Luang Prabang. (Breakfast)

Day 9: Depart from Luang Prabang
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight. (Breakfast)

  3. Pay a non-refundable $500 per person deposit and we will initiate your reservations.
  4. Final payment is due 75 days prior to departure.

If your reservation is made less than 75 days prior to departure, the non-refundable deposit will allow us to initiate reservations. Full payment will be due immediately upon confirmation of all hotels and transportation services. If the services quoted cannot be confirmed, alternate accommodation or transportation will be arranged and the price will be adjusted accordingly.

 

Payments can be made by personal check, bank wire transfer, or credit card. Upon receipt of your deposit, we will initiate your reservations and send you a statement showing your payment. Approximately 4 weeks prior to your departure, we will send you a final confirmation package containing your itinerary and detailed information on the logistics of your trip.

Cancellation/Refund Policies

 

- Cancel more than 60 days prior to departure - forfeit your deposit.

- Cancel between 30 and 60 days prior to departure - forfeit 50% of the tour cost.

- Cancel less than 30 days prior to departure - NO REFUND of tour cost.

- Cancellations must be made in writing and sent via mail, fax, or email to Red Lantern Journeys.

- Refunds will be processed within 30 days of receipt of your written request.

- No refunds are available for unused services or tours during your trip.
