Join the Road To Mandalay for a seven-night, eight-day cruise. Visit Mandalay, the center of Burmese culture, and Sagang famous for its silversmiths before cruising south to Bagan. Explore the magnificent temples and pagodas of Bagan and visit Mount Popa, sacred home of Nats. Cruise north again to Shwe Kyet Yet and discover the ancient capital of Ava and the beautiful hill station of Maymyo.

Itinerary



Day 1:  Arrive Mandalay
Take a morning domestic flight from Yangon to Mandalay. On arrival you will be transferred to the Road To Mandalay at the Ayeyarwady River berthed by the village of Shwe Kyet Yet. After lunch on board, enjoy a guided tour of the key sights of Mandalay regarded as the center of Burmese culture and Buddhist learning. Visit ancient palaces, religious landmarks and the Mahamuni Paya. Dinner and local entertainment on board.

Day 2:  Ava
Experience a walking tour of Ava, the ancient capital of Mandalay, before sailing mid-morning for Bagan. The beauty of the river unfolds as you cruise south. An afternoon lecture on the Burmese way of life will give you more insights into this fascinating country. Overnight on board.

Day 3:  Bagan
Arrive in Bagan where over 2,000 temples and pagodas are scattered over an awe-inspiring plain beside the river. A guided orientation tour introduces you to the most important temples. After lunch you may rejoin the guide to visit the inside of some of the more significant pagodas. Alternatively, you can hire a bicycle or horse-drawn cart and explore this fascinating area on your own. Overnight on board.

Day 4:  Mount Popa

Enjoy a full day excursion to Mount Popa, a national park believed to be the sacred home of powerful 'Nats' (spirits). On top of a rocky crag is a picturesque complex of monasteries, pagodas and shrines which can be reached via a winding, covered walkway. Overnight on board.

Day 5:  Bagan
After breakfast, join your guide to explore some of Bagan's local markets selling wood carvings, fabrics, longis, and rattan goods. Alternatively, hire a bicycle or horse-drawn cart and explore this enchanting area on your own. Mid-morning, the ship sets sail for Mandalay. Afternoon, learn more about Myanmar and its customs during an on-board lecture. A casual cocktail party is followed by dinner. Overnight on board.

Day 6:  Sagaing
Arrive at the village of Shwe Kyet Yet in the early afternoon. After lunch enjoy an excursion to Sagaing considered to be the living center of the Buddhist faith in Burma and famous for its silversmiths who still work in much the same way as their ancestors did. Return to the ship for dinner and local entertainment. Overnight on board.

Day 7:  Maymyo
A full day excursion to Maymyo, a colonial hill station set high in the mountains. Soak up the atmosphere with its cool climate, English style houses, colorful market and beautiful botanic gardens. Return to the ship for a farewell dinner on board. Overnight on board.

Day 8: Departure
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Mandalay airport for your onward flight to Yangon.

 


 

Optional 2 Night Yangon Extension

Day 1:  Yangon
Upon arrival in the Yangon International Airport you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel for two nights. Begin your sightseeing tour of Yangon’s city center with a visit to Sule Pagoda. Your guide will accompany you on a short walk by Kandawgyi lake and then take you to see the sunset at Yangon’s spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda. Enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. Overnight in Yangon.
 
Day 2:  Yangon
After breakfast at the hotel, the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. We will be happy to arrange a half or full day sightseeing tour to suit your interests.  Visit the countryside surrounding Yangon, stopping at Syriam and its pagoda set on a small island in the middle of the river or visit Bago, Burma’s ancient capital. Overnight in Yangon.

Day 3:  Departure
Depending on your itinerary, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Mandalay to continue on the Road to Mandalay cruise or your departure flight home.

Please call us toll free at 1-877-362-2793 and let us know that you would like to book this tour. Then follow these instructions:

  1. Download, print, and fill out the Reservation Form for each person.
  2. Fax the form to us at 206-529-4803, or mail it to:

  3. Pay a non-refundable $500 per person deposit and we will initiate your reservations.
  4. Final payment is due 75 days prior to departure.

If your reservation is made less than 75 days prior to departure, the non-refundable deposit will allow us to initiate reservations. Full payment will be due immediately upon confirmation of all hotels and transportation services. If the services quoted cannot be confirmed, alternate accommodation or transportation will be arranged and the price will be adjusted accordingly.

 

Payments can be made by personal check, bank wire transfer, or credit card. Upon receipt of your deposit, we will initiate your reservations and send you a statement showing your payment. Approximately 4 weeks prior to your departure, we will send you a final confirmation package containing your itinerary and detailed information on the logistics of your trip.

Cancellation/Refund Policies

 

- Cancel more than 60 days prior to departure - forfeit your deposit.

- Cancel between 30 and 60 days prior to departure - forfeit 50% of the tour cost.

- Cancel less than 30 days prior to departure - NO REFUND of tour cost.

- Cancellations must be made in writing and sent via mail, fax, or email to Red Lantern Journeys.

- Refunds will be processed within 30 days of receipt of your written request.

- No refunds are available for unused services or tours during your trip.
