Nepal
Nepal is home to spectacular mountain scenery, national parks filled with exotic wildlife, and some of the best trekking on earth. It's also a fascinating crossroads for the Hindu and Buddhist religions where you'll see ancient temples, stupas, and monasteries containing artifacts and architectural elements of both religions such as the Swayambhunath (Monkey) Temple, and Boudhinath Stupa.
First time trekkers might want to visit the Annapurna, Solo Khumbu (where Mt. Everest is), or Langtang regions because those areas are well supported with tea house lodges and restaurants and camping is not required. If you've 'been there and done that', then consider one of the remote regions such as Mustang or Kanchenjunga or climb a trekking peak such as Island Peak or Mera Peak.
Our Personal Picks
- A trek to Mt. Everest Base Camp
- A Hindu cremation at Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu
- The architecture in the ancient capital of Bhaktapur
- Pokhara for the best mountain views with the least amount of effort
When to Travel Cultural tours of Kathmandu can be done any time of year. The best weather and times to trek in Nepal are in the Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). Skies are clear from December through February and trekking is possible during the winter; however, temperatures at high attitudes can be quite cold, especially at night. Avoid June through mid-September if you're trekking as the annual monsoon rains can ruin the views and leave the trails muddy, wet, and infested with leeches. Visa Information Visas are required to enter Nepal. However, we recommend you obtain a visa on arrival at the Kathmandu Airport or land border crossings. You will need 2 passport photos and this amount of cash:
Multiple entry 15 days: US$ 25 Multiple entry 30 days: US$ 40 Multiple entry 90 days: US$ 100
